Obama, Merkel discuss concerns over US spy programs

President Barack Obama spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday to address mounting European concerns about broad US surveillance programs.

"The president assured the chancellor that the United States takes seriously the concerns of our European allies and partners," the White House said in a readout of the leaders' phone call, adding that the two nations will hold a high-level meeting on intelligence matters "in the coming days."
