British retail sales fall 0.1% in December

British retail sales retreated by 0.1 percent in December from activity in November, the Office for National Statistics said Friday.

Market expectations had been for a gain of 0.2 percent, according to analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

Sales in December meanwhile rose 0.3 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, which dashed forecasts for a bigger increase of 1.0 percent.
