The minority leaders of the House and Senate are surrounding themselves with the triumphant faces of newly elected lawmakers. But the glow of victory isn't hiding Election Day failures.

The onetime House speaker and the first woman to hold the office, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, touted the diversity of her caucus on Tuesday, even though her quest to flip 25 seats and gain control of the House failed by two-thirds.

Republican Mitch McConnell declared his Senate caucus "ready to get started"_ as a minority yet again and under a president whose defeat he had named as his top priority.

With a tight smile, McConnell noted that "the election's behind us."

Pelosi said her caucus is the first in the history of civilized government to have a majority of women and non-whites.
