Municipal elections proceeded according to plan –– Majali

Amman, Aug 27 (Petra) -- Interior Minister Hussein Majali said on Tuesday that the municipal elections, balloting for which began at 7:00 A.M nationwide, proceeded peacefully and as per plan, notwithstanding minor violations that did not mar the polling process.

Majali told Petra that the plan drawn up by his ministry to ensure safe polling was capable of dealing with any "breaches or flaws that might happen here or there," and praised the public for its awareness and conduct, saying citizens were aware of the importance of this phase and election of municipal councils capable to meet their developmental and service needs.

"Citizens in various areas of the Kingdom were going to the polling centres to exercise their constitutional right comfortably and without any hindrance, with their democratic spirits high. The handling by electoral oversight teams and security personnel went smoothly," he said.

Majali said the security plan involved ensuring that the country's borders and crossings remain protected when all social groups were busy with "this democratic display," while providing support, if needed, to security forces in ensuring peace and public order, securing polling centres and all aspects of the electoral process.

Security measures put in place for the elections and election officials won plaudits from the National Centre for Human Rights, whose monitors said the polls were generally smooth as most electoral committees abided by the law and relevant regulations.
