Jordan won't be launchpad for military action against Syria, says minister

Amman, Sep 1 (Petra) — State Minister for Media Affairs, Mohammad Momani, on Sunday said that Jordan is not a party in the ongoing conflict in Syria and will not be a launchpad for any military action against it because that goes contrary to the Kingdom’s higher interests.

Momani, who is also government’s spokesman, renewed Jordan’s call for a political solution to the crisis and stressed that the negotiation table, which brings together all Syrian parties, is the most appropriate place to resolve the crisis in a manner that preserves the unity of Syria and its people.

The minister told a press conference that the government has looked into the state’s civil and military bodies readiness to deal with any emergency that may result from the Syrian crisis, pointing out that: "Our readiness is a precaution and does not stem from a sense of danger as our political stance puts us in a secure place."

"We have gone through many experiences and crises and we were at the highest degrees of readiness, and we feel that there is a fundamental message the public opinion must know that we have deterrent and superior military capabilities and we can protect our security and our borders," Momani added.

He stressed that the army is ready to deal with any refugees issue and has the ability and speed to count, register and send them to refugees camp, pointing out that there is a new camp in Al-Azraq region for this purpose.
