Interior minister, US official discuss security cooperation

Amman, Jan. 22 (Petra) -- Interior Minister Hussein Hazza Majali met on Wednesday with the US Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, William R. Brownfield, in the presence of US Ambassador to Jordan Jones Stuart.

Talks during the meeting covered cooperation between the two countries in the security field and in combating crime and drugs through the exchange of visits, information and training programs.

Majali said that a stronger cooperation between Jordan and the United States would contribute towards achieving security and stability at the local, regional and international level in the light of the contemporary global changes.

He added that the crisis in Syria and the influx of refugees into the Kingdom, in addition to the waves of forced migrants to Jordan in the past, have increased pressure on Jordan's services, education, health, water and energy sectors.

Jordan, the minister said, is in need of international aid to enable it to deal with the impact of the continued flow of refugees into the Kingdom.

The US official praised Jordan's role in alleviating the suffering of the Syrian refugees despite the economic, social and humanitarian hardships that the Kingdom itself faced.
