UNSC ready to take further steps on spoilers in Yemen: UNSC president


NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (Saba) – The Security Council will impose additional sanctions against spoilers of political process in Yemen, British ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, the Council president for August, has said.




“The Security Council is ready, if required, to take additional steps, including imposing further sanctions against individuals and entities that are involved in obstructing the political process in Yemen and threatening its security and stability, to be add to the sanctions included in the Council resolution 2140, Grant said in a press conference held in New York after the Council’s session on Yemen.




Grant indicated to the speech of Yemen’s delegate in UN, which focused on the political and security challenges, and the latest developments in Yemen, particularly the violent acts committed by Houthi group. The Houthis acts make a significant threat to the transition process in Yemen, he said.




All members of the UN Security Council unanimously voted in favor of the presidential statement, which confirms to stand by Yemen and agreed on the strong messages included in the statement for the spoilers, the Council president said.




In its statement issued on Friday, the Security Council voiced grave concern about the recent deterioration of the security situation in Yemen, condemning the actions of Houthis, including their escalating campaign to bring down the Government and undermine the country’s political transition.




The Security Council called on Houthis to withdraw their forces from Amran and return Amran to the government control, cease all armed hostilities in Jawf province and remove the camps and dismantle the checkpoints they have erected in and around capital Sana’a.




Grant said that the Panel of Experts (PoE) of the Sanctions Committee is currently analyzing information on incidents of undermining the political transition, adding that the PoE report will be issued soon and will be considered by the Council to take decisions on the spoilers of the political process in Yemen as well as those who support them.




The Security Council issued on 26 February the resolution 2140, which sets up a sanctions regime that includes an asset freeze and travel ban against peace spoilers and human rights abusers to be designated by the Committee. The relevant Sanctions Committee formed the PoE to assists in identifying such spoilers.
