LAGOS, Nigeria, Oct. 11 (UPI) --
A 120-year-old woman has been rescued from high waters that inundated large portions of Nigeria for more than a week, officials say.
The woman's home in the coastal state of Bayelsa had been flooded and officials said she was near death when she was rescued Wednesday, the Nigerian Tribune reported.
The woman's grandson said if she had not been rescued, she would have washed away in the floods. The elderly woman was taken to a clinic for medical attention.
An official of the State Emergency Medical Services said they had been alerted to the woman's plight by a hotline set up by the government.
No fewer than 1,000 Bayelsa residents have been evacuated to camps set up in the state capital.
