Jobless claims rise by 1,000 in week Share This: UPI 1/23/2014 1:43:45 PM WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- First-time unemployment benefits claims rose slightly in the week that ended Saturday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday. First-time claims rose by 1,000 to 326,000, which is seemingly unchanged from the previous week, due to a revision that dropped last week's figure by 1,000 to 325,000. With the revision, jobless claims have held relatively steady for two weeks. The prior week's decline now stands at 3,000. The four-week rolling average of first-time jobless claims fell by 3,750 to 331,500. The largest increases in initial claims for the week that ended Jan. 11 were in Texas with a gain of 12,800, California, up by 8,319 and Pennsylvania, up by 7,107. The largest decreases were in New York, where claims dropped by 18,019, followed by Georgia with a drop of 7,278 and Alabama with 2,639 fewer claims filed.
