2,300 pounds of trash left on Lake Tahoe's shores after July 4th fireworks show

LAKE TAHOE, Calif., July 8 (UPI) —

Cleanup crews were "shocked" Saturday by the 2,300 pounds of trash left behind by Fourth of July celebrants on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Volunteers cleaned diapers, bottles, cigarette butts and even coolers during the second annual Keep Tahoe Red, White, and Blue Beach Cleanup effort.

"We collected nearly 2,300 pounds of trash from five beaches, including at least 1,500 cigarette butts," said Jesse Patterson, deputy director of Keep Tahoe Blue.

More than saw 120 volunteers covered three miles, which is only 5 percent of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.

Robert Becker of the U.S. Forest Service said that the amount of trash increased, but so did the number of volunteers.

"We really want to thank the volunteers and the businesses that made the cleanup possible," Becker told KCRA. "These beaches are so pristine. They deserve proper stewardship."

In order to keep the beaches "pristine," Patterson has one simple request of future visitors.

"Please pick up or pack in anything you bring to the beach," said Patterson. "The Fourth of July leaves a huge impact on our lake."
