ATLANTA, Aug. 21 (UPI) —
The American doctor being treated for Ebola at an Atlanta hospital has recovered and is expected to leave the hospital Thursday.
Dr. Kent Brantly, who contracted the highly contagious and almost always deadly virus while treating patients in Liberia, is expected to leave the hospital following a press conference at 11 a.m.
Brantly, 33, received experimental treatment before being flown to Atlanta and placed in an isolation unit at Emory University Hospital on August 2. Nancy Writebol, 59, an aid worker who also contracted the virus in Liberia, arrived two days later and was released on Tuesday after making a full recovery.
Frank Graham, the president of Samaritan’s Purse, the organization Brantly and Writebol were working with in Liberia, cheered their recovery in a statement.
"Today, I join all of our Samaritan’s Purse team around the world in giving thanks to God as we celebrate Dr. Kent Brantly’s recovery from Ebola and release from the hospital," he said.
According to the World Health Organization’s latest statistics, there have been a total of 2473 confirmed cases and 1350 people have died in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone since the outbreak of the disease in February.
