iOS 8 hits compatible devices Wednesday

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 16 (UPI) —

Hot on the heels of the successful launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple is set to release its latest operating system — iOS 8.

The operating system will be available for download on the iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or newer, the iPad Mini, the iPad Air and the iPod Touch 5. Apple lovers can start downloading the iOS Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 pm EDT.

While it’s not the huge overhaul users saw last year with iOS 7, there will be some major changes.

Here are a few of the highlights:

The biggest one will be on the onscreen keyboard. As users type a message or email, a list of suggested words will come up.

The Messages app has a new microphone icon. Just tap it to send a voice message.

Video and group messaging will be easier. You can choose to allow people to see your location for a period of time or indefinitely.

The Photos app will automatically sort photos into albums and comes with new editing tools.

Apple says more features will come this fall to better link up mobile devices to Mac laptops and desktop. Those won’t be available until an update for iOS 8 comes out.
