SOUTHBURY, Conn., Sept. 20 (UPI) —
Polly Bergen, Emmy Award-winner for her role in CBS’ Playhouse 90, died Saturday at her him in Southbury, Conn., her publicist said. She was 84.
The actress died of natural causes.
Bergen’s first professional acting role was in the 1949 Western Across the Rio Grande, though she also had a career as a recording artist and on stage in musicals.
In television, she won an Emmy Award in 1958 for her role as tragic singer Helen Morgan in CBS’ Playhouse 90 anthology series.
She also received an Emmy nod for her role in War and Remembrance in 1989.
Bergen had notable roles in Cape Fear, Kisses for My President and as Felicity Huffman’s character’s mother in Desperate Housewives.
She is survived by her children Peter Fields, Kathy Lander and Pamela Fields, and three grandchildren.
