Parks and monuments honored on National Public Lands Day

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) —

If you didn’t know that today, Saturday, September 27, was National Public Lands Day, you’re probably not alone. Besides, it was only just made official yesterday — and now, here it is.

Some people apparently did know about the holiday, as thousands of volunteers showed up on public lands — parks, monuments, nature preserves, battlefields, etc. — to pick up trash, clear hiking trails, and plant new trees.

In honor of their service, all of America’s national parks, refuges and rangelands are offering free admission to the public until closing times today. So there’s still time to celebrate by taking a drive, hike or swim in some of the most beautiful public spaces in the United States, free of charge — places like Acadia, Glacier Lake, the Great Smoky Mountains, Yosemite and so many more.

"From sandy beaches to snow-capped mountain tops, America’s vast and varied landscapes stretch the breadth of our continent," President Obama wrote in a proclamation yesterday.

"My Administration is committed to making land stewardship and outdoor conservation a year-round effort," Obama added.

To remind Americans to get outside, enjoy the scenery and to give thanks for their public lands, many national parks and conservation organizations celebrated National Public Lands Day with a tweet and an enticing nature shot.
