Mikhail Gorbachev admitted to hospital for illness

MOSCOW, Oct. 10 (UPI) —

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was hospitalized early Friday morning for an "aggravation" of an undisclosed illness.

Gorbachev has battled a severe form of diabetes for years and has often received treatment in German hospitals.

"My condition in the last seven days was tolerable, but today I am in the hospital. I have a disease recurrence. I’m monitored, wires all over me," Gorbachev told Russian news services.

The 83-year-old was the last president of the Soviet Union. He announced his resignation in 1991 after overseeing the dismantling of the USSR into the Commonwealth of Independent States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his work to bring openness to the Soviet society and bolstering international confidence.

He has been too ill to keep up with the news of 2014 winners.
