On August 26 Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) spokesman Thomas Faison confirmed that Virginia gunman Vester Lee Flanagan bought his gun “weeks ago” and that “he apparently passed a background check” to get the gun.

On July 24 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) announced that Lafayette theater gunman John Russell Houser bought his gun “legally” at a pawn store in Alabama in 2014.

On July 10, the FBI reported that background checks did not stop Dylann Roof from acquiring the gun he allegedly used to kill nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on June 17.
