FAA Proposes Commercial Drone Licenses to Anyone Paying $200 Fee

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unveiled its first commercial drone use regulation for unmanned aerial vehicles under 55 pounds on Sunday, 46 days later than promised. Not to be left out of the headlines, the White House issued a Presidential Directive requiring federal agencies to begin disclosing where they fly drones in the U.S. and what they do with the blizzard of surveillance data they have been collecting.

FAA Opening Skies to Commercial Drone Use

On January 14, the Dallas Morning News published an editorial sharply criticizing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) drone program. Specifically, the editorial stated, “The drone program run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection is more expensive than it is effective. It lacks adequate performance measures and established goals, and has serious limitations.” However, on January 19, the paper published a Letter to the Editor from CBP stating the portrayal was inaccurate, and that drones are “a proven, effective surveillance technology enhancing CBP’s operational capabilities and increasing our awareness along the nation’s borders and coasts.”

Drone with Drugs Crashes Near U.S./Mexico Border

Mexican drug smugglers are using a more advanced way to transport their product into the United States: drones. Tijuana police said that a drone that crashed into a supermarket parking lot Tuesday night near the San Ysidro crossing was chock-full of illicit methamphetamine.
