The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that states may punish “faithless electors” — those members of the Electoral College who refuse to cast their ballots for the candidate whom the majority of voters in the state have chosen.
The U.S. Supreme Court heard a case in which electors were fined by the State of Washington for casting their Electoral College votes for a candidate other than the one chosen by the voters.
A bill pre-filed in the Texas Legislature on December 28 would put teeth into circumventing a “faithless elector.” Any attempt by an elector to cast a vote for anyone other than the candidates that received the popular vote in the Lone Star State would be void. Moreover, casting the void vote would immediately create a vacancy in the elector’s position.
The Electoral College vote is usually a formality, a minor news story scarcely noticed by anyone who isn’t directly involved in the process. Yet in their quest to sabotage the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s administration before he even takes office, Democrats managed to turn the 2016 Electoral College vote into another humiliating defeat for their own leader, Hillary Clinton.
The now infamous Texas “Faithless Elector” Christopher Suprun revealed he will cast his Electoral College Ballot on Monday for Ohio Governor John Kasich.
Chris Suprun, the Republican “faithless elector” from Texas who says he will not vote for Donald Trump when that state’s electors gather in Austin on Monday, “was apparently not a first responder on September 11, 2001, as he has stated for years and has a questionable career history, according to an investigation by WFAA.”
A member of the Electoral College representing California filed a lawsuit on Friday against state officials, seeking to overturn a state law requiring all 55 electors from the state to support the winner of the statewide vote.
