Women living under control of the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) revealed to The Guardian the militant group has imposed more restrictions on females since taking over new territories. The terrorist group forces people to live under strict Sharia law, which treats women like second-class citizens. Rules include double-layered veils and marrying off girls as young as 9.

Kurds Turn Away Foreign Volunteers From the ISIS Front

According to an article at the Kurdish outlet Rudaw, Peshmerga militia forces have had to turn back a high number of foreign fighters attempting to join the war on the Islamic State. Repeated attempts to discourage the foreign fighters and request arms aid instead have failed to stop the flow into Iraq.

Westerners Journey to Iraq and Join Christian Militia to Fight ISIS

When one hears a story of Western civilians heading to the Middle East to volunteer for combat duty, one thinks of the hideously successful ISIS recruiting drive. However, as Reuters reports, “a handful of idealistic Westerners are enlisting” with a Christian militia group called Dwekh Nawsha, “citing frustration their governments are not doing more to combat the ultra-radical Islamists or prevent the suffering of innocents.”

Retreat: Marines Training in California to Evacuate Embassies

As uncertainty continues to plague the Middle East, Marines in Barstow, California have begun undergoing training to prepare for a a second round of deployments this spring into the war-ravaged region. In light of the recent closure of several U.S. embassies in countries such as Yemen, these “crisis-response capability” troops could be ordered to assist with evacuating embassies that have come under siege in the same way.

Iraqi-Born Priest Kidnapped and Beaten Returns as Bishop

In 2006, Father Basel Yaldo was kidnapped in his native Iraq by Islamist extremists and endured three days of fierce beatings. Even after being released, he continued to receive death threats, and was eventually sent to the United States in 2007 for his own safety. Last month, Yaldo returned to Iraq and, on Friday, was ordained a bishop in Baghdad. He will stay there to serve the Iraqi people.
