In contrast to others, I confirm Radical Islam exists. Political scientists, including Muslim political scientists, know it as Islamism. Only part of Islamism expresses violence – violence frequently identified as terrorism. Much of Islamism pursues non-violent ambitions devoted to a new but entirely 20th Century totalitarianism, which is now the preeminent threat of our age. Islamism is the new totalitarianism.

Ever since the holiday season, the White House has made a variety of vague assurances that ISIS recruitment is ramping down, the flow of fighters into the Islamic State has been choked off, and the weakened terror state is on the run. This is certainly a development to be hoped for, but it does not seem to have happened yet. A burst of news reports over the last few days state that, on the contrary, ISIS recruiting is still going distressingly well, both in the Middle East and West. The Pentagon has also conceded that ISIS is expanding into Afghanistan, with some success at convincing Taliban groups to swear fealty to them.

Despite all we already know about the so-called Islamic State terrorist organization, the murder of American Kayle Mueller still manages to be shocking. And her defiant declaration of faith, in a letter to her family, is both heartbreaking and uplifting. Her death–which ISIS had the nerve to blame on Jordanian bombing–cries out for vengeance, not just “justice”–the term the president chose, one that may denote retribution but might also offer the undeserved dignity of civilian trial.
