Sunday in Iowa, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called on President Barack Obama to work with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to “take the lemons and turn it into lemonade” by making changes to his Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)
“The president should listen to and work with his allies in Congress, starting with Nancy Pelosi, who had expressed their concerns about the impact that a weak agreement would have on our workers to make sure we get the best strongest deal possible,” Clinton said. “And if we don’t get it, there should be no deal.”
Friday, the House defeated TAA 126-302, in a striking rebuke to President Obama who had hours earlier met with the Democratic caucus to make the case for fast-track trade authority.
Pelosi took to the House floor to reveal that she would be opposing a the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) bill to “slow down the fast-track,” or Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). The 126-302 vote against TAA, represented a striking defeat for Obama who had visited the Democratic caucus that morning to plea for support.
But Obama struck out when the vote came to the floor, as more than 300 Democrats opted to vote against it.
Pelosi’s move came hours after Obama made a plea to House Democrats in the Capitol to support the trade effort.
