The San Antonio Independent School District unveiled a handbook they hope will combat fears about the state’s “anti-sanctuary city” law and how it may affect their “undocumented” community.
Texas took its fight for the State’s new anti-sanctuary jurisdiction ban to the appellate courts. A judge appointed by then-President Bill Clinton blocked the law’s prohibition on ignoring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers and provisions that address policies that “materially limit” the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
A Texas sheriff is actively promoting visas to the illegal immigrant community. The sheriff has prepared pamphlets advising certain illegal immigrants how they might qualify for special visas.
Travis County Sheriff “Sanctuary Sally” Hernandez joined with four other Texas sheriffs to declare that “FBI crime statistics have found that labeled ‘sanctuary’ cities experience lower rates of all crime types, including homicides.” Fact checkers at PolitiFact, a left-of-center watchdog, said no such FBI report exists, but labeled their statements “Half-True.”
Following Monday’s announcement by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he is withholding federal law enforcement grants from sanctuary jurisdictions, a Texas sheriff quickly tried to claim this action would not apply to her county.
The Texas Attorney General has issued a letter signing off on the legality of requiring governmental entities to cooperate with federal authorities when they are enforcing immigration laws. Police officers may also not be prohibited from verifying immigration status.
Senate Bill 4, known as the Health for All Act, passed in California’s Senate on Tuesday, 28-11, taking illegal immigrants residing in the Golden State one step closer to attaining health insurance coverage.
