Governor Jerry Brown (D) signed a law Saturday that bars law-abiding, licensed citizens from carrying guns on campuses in California for self-defense.

On September 1, California Assembly members voted 42 to 23 to repeal an exemption that currently allows concealed carry permit holders to carry their guns on college and university campuses for self-defense.

On August 19 the California legislature will take up a new gun control measure, Senate Bill 347–a bill designed to expand the reasons for which California residents can face a 10-year ban on gun possession.

During the past week. two Republican state senators in California voted to further limit the places in which concealed carry permit holders can carry a gun for self-defense.

California state senator Lois Wolk’s (D-Davis) push to outlaw concealed carry on college campuses received a boost when Wolk made an exemption for retired police officers, thereby gaining the support of the California Police Chiefs Association and the Peace Officers Research Association of California.

California law that bans guns on school and university campuses exempts people with a concealed carry license. State Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) is pushing legislation to change that law so that concealed carry permit holders are banned, as well.
