Compton Teachers Stage 2nd ‘Sick-out’ in a Week

On Friday, for the second time in a week, teachers in Compton failed to show up for work at 10 of the school district’s 37 campuses, according to teachers’ union president Patrick Sullivan. The school district claimed nine campuses were affected, as KPCC reported.

Florida Teachers Fleeing the Profession

It appears that teachers in Brevard County in central Florida are leaving the profession in greater numbers. According to Florida Today, which interviewed some of the teachers voluntarily exiting, factors impelling the teachers to leave include the lack of respect from students and administrators, low pay, health problems, and the long hours necessary to prepare for classes.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Two Maryland Teachers Allegedly Assaulted Within One Week

On February 5, a teacher at Maryland’s Tuscarora High School was assaulted and “taken to a local hospital for treatment.” Exactly one week prior, on January 29, a teacher at Maryland’s Forestville High School was beaten then “treated in [a] hospital for minor injuries.”

A substitute teacher is not necessarily someone who most people think of as a full-time employee but school districts are grappling with the reality that the federal government considers anyone who works an average of 30 week hours as one.
