It’s unclear if Mitch McConnell will now abandon his plans to push through Obama’s trade agenda, or if he’ll try again to pass it—but one thing is now clear: It’s going to be a lot more difficult than anyone thought to get this through the Senate even if it is possible to do so.

A Free Trader’s Case for Skepticism on Obama’s Trade Deal

I believe in free trade. I think the evidence is compelling that the free flow of goods and services makes Americans better off and is a fundamental national interest. It also reduces global poverty and increases the potential for liberty worldwide. The costs to jobs in some industries can be partly addressed by job growth in others. So I am on board, in theory, for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and other deals, including with the EU. But I don’t think Obama has earned the trust for “fast-track.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Address Joint Session of Congress

AFP reports that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress in April, making him the first prime minister of Japan to deliver such an address. The event is to come at the end of a visit in April focused on “deepening trade and military ties,” although there is speculation he will also cover the “evils and horrors” of Japan’s history, as he did during a speech to the Australian Parliament last July.
