The Evergreen State College Board of Trustees has condemned the actions of protesters who are calling for the resignation of Professor Bret Weinstein.

Gretchen Sorensen, the chairwoman of the Evergreen State College Board of Trustees, released a statement on the chaos that led to Professor Bret Weinstein holding his biology class in a nearby park due to the police department’s concern for his safety. Sorenson condemned the community members who she claimed “exhibited unacceptable behavior.”

During the last week, the conduct of a small percentage of Evergreen’s community members exhibited unacceptable behavior that is completely contrary to Evergreen’s values. Although almost all of the students continued to attend classes and receive the extraordinary education that Evergreen delivers, the lack of tolerance and respect displayed by a few during these recent events and disruptions is indefensible.

Sorensen, an alumna of the college herself, reaffirmed the college’s commitment to free speech, arguing that civil discourse has been a “cornerstone” of Evergreen’s history.

Freedom of speech, civil discourse and open debate has been a cornerstone of our country’s history — and Evergreen’s history. In difficult times, these pillars become even more significant. Intellectual inquiry, freedom of expression, tolerance and inclusiveness are core tenets of Evergreen’s philosophy and approach to education. Anyone who prevents Evergreen from delivering a positive and productive learning environment for all students has, and will continue to be, held accountable for their actions and face appropriate consequences.

On Sunday, Bret Weinstein posted an image on his Twitter account of graffiti on the outside of Evergreen’s Purce Hall. “F*ck racist faculty,” read one marking. “No Evergreen PD,” reads another, alluding to the student’s demand that the community take ownership of the college’s police department.
