Huffington Post: ‘Evergreen College and the Fascism of the Illiberal Left’

Huffington Post contributor Matt Teitelbaum condemned the chaos brought on by leftist protesters at Evergreen State College demanding the firing of Professor Bret Weinstein.

Teitelbaum, who was the former president of the College Democrats of Maryland, condemned the “dangerous authoritarian streak” of leftist students at Evergreen State College, who are demanding Professor Bret Weinstein’s resignation over his refusal to participate in an event in which white community members were asked to leave campus for the day.

At Evergreen State College in Washington, the dangerous authoritarian streak of college-aged, left-wing extremists is being exposed in disturbing detail. In recent weeks, social justice activists demanded that white students refrain from attending class or being present on campus on a predetermined day, in order to appropriately, from their perspective, observe the traditional “Day of Absence.” Evolutionary Biology Professor Bret Weinstein wrote an email objecting to this event, in part, saying that to force every white member of campus to leave would be “an act of oppression in and of itself,” Weeks later, when this email became public, it did not take long for a mob to assemble.

Teitelbaum calls the allegations of racism against Weinstein “unfounded” and questions why the college administration refused to defend him, even after police declared that Weinstein’s safety was at risk.

He goes on to argue that these students aren’t actually liberals, but rather “illiberal, left-wing fascists” who aren’t interested in dialogue, but rather enacting their political agenda “at all costs.” He cites incidents at Middlebury College and at UC Berkeley to highlight the trend of illiberal leftists irrationally wreaking havoc on their campus in response to the “presence of a dissenting voice.”

Teitelbaum closes by telling fellow liberals that those that don’t condemn the actions of illiberal campus leftists are complicit in their actions.

However, this insanity is unrepresentative of true liberalism. Liberals who don’t call out these illiberal fascists are complicit in their growing influence and impunity. We real liberals must wake up, we must stand up, and we must act.
