Students and faculty at the public Kent State University organized an art auction that took place last week to raise money for Planned Parenthood.

The auction took place at the university’s downtown art gallery and was organized in part by Art Professor Janice Lessman-Moss, who claimed that the event was formed in response to the nation’s current political climate.

“We felt like we needed to do something to make our situation better,” Lessman-Moss said. “One hundred percent of tonight’s proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood, and it’s nice to see that people care.”

Lessman-Moss said in an interview with Campus Reform that the University had no official role in the auction, despite that the event took place on University property and was organized by the institution’s staff. The auction was also advertised on the University’s official website, which listed the professors who helped to organized the event.

“We work with a lot of progressive groups on campus,” noted Madison Newingham, president of the Planned Parenthood Advocates group at Kent State University, “but this is the first thing we’ve [done] with the School of Art, and I absolutely love it.”
