A professor at San Antonio College came to class in full body armor last week to protest a new policy allowing concealed carry on campus.
Professor Charles K. Smith of San Antonio College attended his classes last week in full body armor to protest a new concealed carry law that will permit students with proper licenses to carry a concealed handgun on college campuses.
“It definitely makes me feel uneasy that there are more firearms on campus than there really should be,” Smith added, fretting that while some students likely carried illegally in the past, the new law “increases the chances of something happening.”
To protest the new policy, the geography professor arrived to class last Tuesday in protective combat gear, which included a bulletproof vest and helmet.
Smith argues that students who “got mad” at him in the past “had to go home to get the gun and had time to cool off; now they will have it with them.”
On the Facebook page where the image of Smith was originally posted, one commenter, identifying himself as a professor, wrote that Smith’s choice to wear combat could be interpreted as a taunt. He also explained that experts have ruled that a single armed teacher at Sandy Hook could have helped prevent some of the violence.
I too am a professor and while my students don’t know whether I am carrying a concealed weapon or not PLUS I do NOT ask who is. I have witnessed a 14 year old girl shoot and kill a 17 year old boy in a hallway as students were going into home room. Experts have testified if more teachers/administrators were properly trained Littleton HS and Sandy Hook would never have been the needless slaughter they were. Actually professor if I came into your classroom and saw you dressed like that I’d turn around and leave because I deduce you’re taunting someone to take action against you.
