Denise Young Smith, Apple’s new Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, has said that she likes to focus “on everyone” and that “diversity goes beyond race, gender and sexual orientation.”
Young Smith, who was hired by Apple in May, claimed during the One Young World Summit in Colombia that, “There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blonde men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation.”
During the summit, the diversity vice president also added that she likes to focus “on everyone” and that “diversity goes beyond race, gender, and sexual orientation,” according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
“Diversity is the human experience… I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT,” Young Smith declared to applause from the audience.
In response to the speech, several users on Twitter attacked Young Smith, with some not realizing that the speech came from a black woman.
In August, a Google employee spoke exclusively to Breitbart Tech, claiming that “senior leaders focus on diversity first and technology second,” while in the same month, The New York Times Magazine admitted that Breitbart News had a “good record of promoting women and minorities” at the company, and had amassed a team with more diversity than most American news outlets.
