Texas Primary Voters Embrace Conservative Propositions

Texas Primary Voters Embrace Conservative Propositions

TEXAS–With margins in excess of over 85 percent, all of the primary initiatives on the Republican Primary ballot sailed to easy victory. The largest margin of victory, 99.36 percent, goes to a conservative principle that states “Elected officials and staff should be subject to same laws as constituents.”

While the ballot initiatives have no weight in law, they serve as strong messages to the elected officials as to the will of Republican voters in Texas. The overwhelming majority by which these propositions passed sends a clear message about just how conservative motivated Republican voters have swung.

With 99.95 percent of the ballots counted, here are the results of each proposition:

  • Proposition 1 expressed the party’s clear commitment to religious freedom under the First Amendment.  The measure reads, “Texans should be free to express their religious beliefs, including prayer, in public places.  This initiative passed with over 97 percent of the vote.
  • Proposition 2 is another strong conservative issue dealing with the Second Amendment.  It states that Republican voters favor “expanding locations where CHL holders may legally carry” and passed by nearly 87 percent.
  • Proposition 3 received nearly 88 percent support. This proposition calls on the legislature to “abolish the state franchise tax to encourage business growth.”
  • Proposition 4 solidly passed with nearly 95 percent of the votes cast.  It calls for “welfare recipients to be tested for drugs before receiving benefits.”
  • Proposition 5, passed with a near unanimous vote of 99.36 percent states that “elected official and staff should be subject to same laws as constituents.”
  • Proposition 6 called for elected officials to “repeal the Affordable Care Act” known as Obamacare. This measure passed with 93 percent of the vote.

These propositions and the huge margins by which they passed send a clear message to legislators, Congressmen and Senators that Texas is still a very solid red state.
