70% of Border Patrol Caring for Minors, Not Securing Border

Laredo, Texas–U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Laredo sector are primarily caring for unaccompanied minors and incomplete family units instead of securing the border, according to a spokesman for the local chapter of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). “On average, 70 percent of our agents are taking care of the illegal aliens and not securing the border,” said NBPC Local 2455 spokesman Hector Garza.

The Laredo sector sits directly across the Rio Grande River from Mexico’s Nuevo Laredo, Los Zetas cartel territory. The area has no physical barriers to prevent illegal immigration or narcotics smuggling, only the narrow river that is mostly shallow.

The area has not received any aid from the Texas surge of Department of Public Safety officers and is solely dependent on Border Patrol agents for security.

Breitbart Texas also spoke with Shawn Moran, vice president of the NBPC on the matter. He confirmed Agent Garza’s numbers and said, “The agency needs to find other resources to take care of these aliens, not continue pulling agents off of their posts. Cartels are exploiting this crisis and Border Patrol agents need to be securing the border, not being babysitters.” He added, “This is going on anywhere that the CBP is sending these unaccompanied minors. It takes resources to care for them and we are supposed to be securing the border.”
