HOUSTON, Texas — A homeschooled 16-year-old from Frisco, Texas, whose name has not been released, was arrested for shooting and killing his own parents. The teen was reportedly known for being “very sheltered” and was prohibited by his parents from watching PG-13 movies, drinking soda, and using the internet freely.
The parents were 48-year-old Ryan Callens and his 49-year-old wife Elena Callens. The teenager allegedly shot them dead in their middle class home at 2 a.m. on Monday, according to the Daily Mail.
Police reportedly do not have a motive in the killing, but neighbors and friends of the teen suspect made it clear that his parents were unusually strict.
One of the teenaged son’s friends, 15-year-old Jonathan Marcum, told KXAS-TV that the parents “didn’t allow any PG-13 movies, and if they did they would have it on Clear Play, which would take all the violent moments and skip it. So there was pretty much no violence in that family.”
William Castillo, another friend, reportedly shared the sentiment and told the Dallas Morning News, “His parents were really uptight on him.”
Other teens apparently said that when the 16-year-old broke his parents’ rules, he was punished.
The Daily Mail reported that the suspect attended public elementary school and middle school. His parents, however, chose to homeschool him once he entered high school. Neighbors believed that the teen made it known that he liked being homeschooled.
The Callens had five children, the 16-year-old suspect being the youngest. According to the Daily Mail, two others are in college, one just finished high school, and the other is a student at Centennial High School, a public school in Fisco.
Generally, the 16-year-old teen was known around town to be a “good kid” and have a “very good heart,” shocked neighbors told local media outlets.
At this time, it is unclear where the suspect got the gun he allegedly used to murder his parents.
