MCALLEN, Texas — Two Gulf Cartel gunmen died in a shootout with the Mexican military in Reynosa, a border city in the northern party of Tamaulipas, Mexico, directly across the border from Hidalgo, Texas.

The recent shootout took place in the Pradera De Elite Neighborhood just behind the Reynosa airport when a convoy of soldiers spotted a truck with two cartel gunmen who fired at the soldiers and sped off trying to avoid capture, information released to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas government revealed.

The soldiers pursued the gunmen and fired back killing the two gunmen, one of which was identified as 43-year-old Luis Angel Sanchez Rodriguez.

While Mexican federal officials continue to attempt to portray Mexico as a safe destination, the cities along the border continue to be the scene of regular shootouts between drug cartel members and the military. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the U.S. Department of State continues to warn tourists about Tamaulipas, citing the areas propensity for violence and kidnappings.
