MCALLEN, Texas — Osiel Cardenas Jr., the son of the former supreme leader of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cardenas Guillen, has pleaded guilty to smuggling ammunition from the border city of Brownsville, Texas into Matamoros, Mexico.

Cardenas went before U.S. District Judge Andrew Hannen and pleaded guilty to a federal charge of attempting to smuggle ammunition into Mexico, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed.

As previously reported by Breitbart Texas, the 23 year old Cardenas is a U.S. citizen and had been driving a 2015 Cadillac Escalade from Brownsville to Matamoros on December 31 when U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers pulled him over for a secondary inspection. During the inspection, a stash of ammunition hidden in various factory compartments was found within the car.

Cardenas’ father ruled the Gulf Cartel with an iron fist from the early 1990’s until his extradition to the U.S. in 2007. He is credited with the creation of Los Zetas cartel that started as his personal guard before expanding into the current fearsome cartel.
