A squad of gunmen stormed into the campaign headquarters of a Mexican congressional candidate and opened fire, killing him and injuring another political hopeful in the central Mexican town of Valle De Chalco.

After being rushed to a local hospital with multiple gunshot injuries, Miguel Angel Luna Mungia, a congressional candidate for the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), ended up dying from his injuries, Mexico’s SinEmbargo.Mx reported.

Moments after the attack, the PRD issued a statement condemning the deadly shooting, which adds another murder to a political season that has been stained with blood, and filled with electoral irregularities. Authorities have not yet confirmed if the murder is connected to Mexican drug cartels.

As Breitbart Texas previously reported, last March cartel hitmen kidnapped and beheaded Aida Nava Gonzalez, who was preparing to run for Mayor in a small rural town in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Since Nava’s murder, two other mayoral candidates in Guerrero and Michoacán have been slain in the days leading to the June 7 elections in Mexico.

In addition to the murdered candidates, two current mayors in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas survived assassination attempts by cartel gunmen who ambushed their convoys, as Breitbart Texas previously reported. The Tamaulipas government has attempted to dismiss both murder attempts as confusion by the cartel members, who might have been trying to eliminate other targets. In both cases the border mayors came under fire from multiple cartel vehicles, and survived only because they traveled in armored SUVs.
