An Indiana State Police trooper was shot in the hand during a gunfight on Thursday that left a wanted man dead. The trooper was shot in the hand while attempting to arrest a wanted suspect. He returned fire, killing the suspect.

Brandon Foy, 29, was wanted by police on weapons charges. Police say he had also been under investigation for dealing heroin, according to a report by WTHR NBC13.

Indiana State Police (ISP) spokesman, Sergeant Rich Meyers, told reporters that a surveillance operation on a narcotics suspect was underway when Foy spotted an ISP trooper wearing a vest clearly marked “POLICE.” Foy drew his weapon and pointed it at the trooper. He then fled and jumped a privacy fence. The trooper, while engaged in the foot pursuit, was fired on and returned fire on the suspect, killing him. The trooper sustained an injury to his left index finger.

One witness told reporters she heard five or six rounds fired during the exchange. A maintenance man for the apartment complex where the shooting took place said the suspect had also pointed the gun at him at one point. He said the suspect realized he was not a threat and no shots were fired.

Another man reported hearing a couple of shots and then five more shots.

This was not the first police shooting at the Eagle Point Apartments, located in northwest Indianapolis. Just under two years ago an Indianapolis Metro Police Officer, Rod Bradway, was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call, WTHR reported. “Right up there in those front apartments,” said resident Thomas Stine. “It’s a shame that all the wrong people got the guns.”

The trooper involved in Thursday’s shooting has not been publicly identified. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for the injury to his left hand and released.

Sergeant Meyers told the NBC13 reporter he was grateful for the support they had received “not only our department but friends and family through IMPD and the sheriff’s department and everyone who came up there to help out and who’s still helping us out with this detail that we’ve had here. We’re very grateful. They’re very helpful.”
