REYNOSA, Tamaulipas — Mexican authorities continue to cover up the ongoing cartel violence that takes place throughout the state, particularly in the gun battles where cartel gunmen get the upper hand.

In one of the recent gun battles, the Gulf Cartel was able to mobilize a large number of gunmen–forcing police officers to retreat from one neighborhood known for being filled with stash houses.

Mexican Federal Police officers dive for cover as cartel gunmen begin firing at them.

The gun battle took place last week when Mexican Federal Police officers had been chasing a group of men riding a black Chevrolet Malibu. The chase moved from the highway connecting this city to Nuevo Laredo to the Caracoles neighborhood where the gunmen tried to blend in with the locals. Residents from the neighborhoods Rancho Grande, Olmos and Hacienda Las Fuentes ran for cover as gunfire was exchanged.

The gunmen in the Malibu received backup from an SUV, forcing the police officers to retreat. A video taken by a resident shows the moment police officers begin taking gunfire and seek cover. Both police officers and cartel gunmen called for additional forces.

A second SUV loaded with cartel gunmen were the first to arrive, thus overwhelming the federal police forces. The overwhelming firepower allowed the cartel gunmen and the occupants of the Malibu to flee, leaving the damaged car behind.

Despite multiple accounts from neighbors about the fighting that took place, neither the Mexican government nor the Tamaulipas government released any information regarding the gun battle or the reason for the chase. While the Tamaulipas government has continued to provide a number of news releases about the capture of criminals and the seizures of drugs or stolen goods, information about all the gun battles that take place along the border remains severely limited.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “A.C. Del Angel” from Reynosa.
