A group of gunmen opened fire to execute two police officers patrolling near government offices in Guanajuato. That state, at one time, was a peaceful but has since become the target of one of the most violent and powerful cartels in Mexico.

The bodies of Guanajuato State policemen Jose Ricardo Mosqueda Cabrera and Angelica Herrera Rodriguez were left inside their cruiser labeled as Unit 286-A1. The pair had been patrolling a state courthouse in Apaseo el Alto when the gunmen opened fire. The double execution comes days after three other cops were executed at the start of the year.

The cartel gunmen used tactical rifles to spray gunfire and then fled in two separate vehicles, adding two more names to the growing list of police executed since Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion began their takeover of the state. Before the violence started, Guanajuato was known as a peaceful area that was popular among U.S tourists.

A week before the double homicide, a team of gunmen executed the operations director for Irapuato’s Police Javier Castañeda Vargas. As Breitbart Texas reported, at around the same time of that murder in Salvatierra, a team of gunmen stormed a local hospital to kill the survivor of a prior shooting. The gunmen not only killed their victim, but also murdered a state police officer guarding him.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tony Aranda from Nuevo León.
