Texas High School Coach Confesses to Sex with Student: I ‘Needed to Be Arrested’

An East Texas high school coach confessed to having sex with a female student, calling himself a “monster,” a “predator,” and told district officials he “needed to be arrested.”

Jacob Vincent Badgett, 25, a physical education teacher and coach for the Spring Hill Independent School District, was arrested by Longview police on March 8, one day after making this stunning admission to administrators.

Police charged Badgett with having an improper relationship between an educator and a student. The Longview News-Journal reported that detectives booked him into the Gregg County Jail on $50,000. He later bonded out.

This situation came to a head when Badgett met privately with the district athletic director and Superintendent Steve Snell on March 7. He divulged he had “an explicit relationship with a student.” Badgett then urged these Spring Hill ISD officials to “call 911 because he needed to be arrested,” according to an arrest warrant released Monday.

When the investigating Longview police officer joined this meeting “Badgett turned around and put his hands behind his back as if to have handcuff(s) put on.” In the affidavit, the alleged suspect called himself a “monster” and a ‘predator,” and was certain that “everybody knows.”

Badgett did not initially reveal the identity of the female student. He only told Snell that he had “gotten careless with emails and text messages,” according to the affidavit.

The purported suspect asked to speak to his father and, then, told him to contact a lawyer. Badgett fretted his son would grow up without a father because he was in jail, but Snell told police he was unaware Badgett had any children. Local police said they spoke to the violated female student’s parents about the alleged sexual misconduct.

KLTV reported Longview police subsequently questioned the unidentified female student who admitted to texting with the coach. She acknowledged she had a “crush” on Badgett but said she would never “cross the line with a teacher.” However, she also stated that she “wouldn’t tell if she had crossed the line because she knew Badgett would get into trouble.” The girl said she and Badgett had “protected sex” and that he “used condoms,” according to the affidavit. She also told detectives she hung around at the school after hours even when Badgett did not schedule any sports-related practice sessions.

Badgett was a Spring Hill ISD employee since January 2017, serving as an elementary school physical education teacher, a football coach at the junior high, and a power lifting coach at the high school. He resigned on March 7.

Last week, officers obtained a search warrant for Badgett’s apartment where they seized laptops, iPads, and other personal possessions to test for “evidence of sexual activity, sexual intercourse, or sexual contact.”

It remains unclear how Spring Hill ISD officials learned about improper relationship between Badgett and the female student, In a statement, the school district indicated they turned the investigation over to Longview police. “Since the case is under investigation by the police department, the District has no further comments at this time.”
