The worst of the violence took place in the Athen’s suburb where 15-year-old Alex Grigoropoulos was killed by police a week earlier. As night fell, hundreds of hooded youths fought running battles with police, smashing shop windows and hurling petrol bombs and flares. Elsewhere in the capital, police took a tougher line with protesters, using pepper spray and tear gas to break up a peaceful protest outside the parliament.
