Freedom of Press on Ballot in Ecuador

President Rafael Correa is putting 10 questions to Ecuadorean voters on Saturday in a referendum which could have a profound impact on the judiciary, business and media. Correa, a leftwing ally of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, argues the changes will modernise Ecuador, but others say they would give him excessive power. One proposal would create a council with the power to regulate the media — stoking fears that freedom of speech is on the line.
