George Will: 'We Are in a Position of Extraordinary Weakness'

On Monday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist George Will said there was very little the United States could do regarding Russia’s invasion into Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.

GEORGE WILL: Well, we are in a position of extraordinary weakness, and I’m not sure it’s Obama’s fault. I think that we have to avoid — there’s a political scientist named Greg Weiner who calls this the narcissistic policy disorder. That’s the belief that everything in the world happens because of something we did or didn’t do or said or didn’t say.

If the president had gone ahead and forced his red line and bombed Syria, the people of Ukraine still would have gone into the streets, probably still would have toppled their president, would have provoked Putin and we would have been about where we are now.

So the question is what can we do about that? One thing we can do is to talk about it more realistically. One administration spokesman referred to the invasion by the Russian troops as an unopposed entry into the Ukraine. We have to talk about it more sensibly.

Then we have to consider things such as reversing the president’s reversal of the previous decision from the other administration — the Bush administration — to put ABMs in Poland and the Czech Republic. Increase the economic pressure, there are a lot of things we can do. But we’re not in a position of strength.
