CA Vet with Cancer Stuck on VA Waiting List for 8 Months with 7 More to Go

Curtis, a veteran from Sacramento, CA who says he has been diagnosed with kidney cancer, told radio host Tom Sullivan that he has been waiting eight months for his application for treatment to be processed. He said that he sent a claim into the Oakland VA office, and after waiting for six months, was told that because his kidney cancer was due to radiation exposure in the first Gulf War, he would have to submit an application to the Jackson, MS office.

Curtis said that two months later, he was informed by the Jackson office that applications like his “were really complicated,” and the process “takes a really long time.” He stated “after eight months, the response from the Jackson office is they actually haven’t gotten to it yet, they haven’t scanned it.” Curtis further claimed that the Jackson office had updated him on the progress made on his application, and that they “might get back to me sometime in 2015.” Curtis said he reached out to Rep. Tom McClintock’s (R-CA) office, and the VA in Jackson informed McClintock that Curtis’ case would be expedited, but only if Curtis was moved into hospice care.
