On this morning’s edition of Washington Journal, Leo Shane, the congressional reporter for the Military Times, received a surprise when he fielded calls from veterans and active duty military members on the VA healthcare system. One of those veterans, a caller from Ohio identified as “Harold,” sharply criticized those who opposed allowing veterans to receive vouchers for private care. Harold stated “a small percentage of veterans are being treated by the VA,” and that because there are “a lot of these veterans that are having problems are waiting on colonoscopies and things like that,” they could receive care at private facilities.
Harold finished his call by asking why the Military Times and other agencies haven’t investigated the numbers on VA treatment more thoroughly. He ultimately concluded that Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) “is a world-class jerk for not wanting to let these people have vouchers.”
