Report: Bergdahl Wanted to Renounce US Citizenship

Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported on the Fox News Channel on Tuesday that U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s platoon mates stated in their debriefings that “there was a letter in which [Bergdahl] was disillusioned by the U.S. Army, and wanted to renounce his U.S. citizenship.”

According to Griffin, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, stated that he “will not rule out investigating Bergdahl for desertion.” Griffin also reported that the letter will not likely be seen by the media, and that due to the nondisclosure agreements signed by Bergdahl’s platoon mates and the fact that the files regarding Bergdahl are classified, details will have to be acquired from his fellow soldiers.

Griffin also said on Sean Hannity’s radio show on Tuesday that according to Bergdahl’s unit members, the letter also included “a lot of anti-American sentiment” and Bergdahl’s wish to “find the Taliban.” Griffin also said that the army is re-opening its investigation into the circumstances of Bergdahl’s departure from his base now that he is available to be debriefed. She added that Bergdahl was not considered a POW because doing so would require prisoners in Guantanamo Bay to be classified as POWs.
