On Fox News Channel following the announcement of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) primary loss to Tea Party upstart Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA), network political editor said this was the end of comprehensive immigration reform.
“Well, I think you can pretty conclusively say that the idea of comprehensive immigration overhaul is dead meat,” Stirewalt. “The president is going to do what he wants to do this will send the loudest, strongest clearest message inside the Republican party that the GOP base will not tolerate what Eric Cantor and what others have tried. You point out South Carolina where Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is having a much better time of it. I think to Graham’s advantage, he saw this coming, he worked on it it he had a positive message going out to tea partiers.”
