Feinstein: Rise of ISIS in Iraq a Surprise to US Intel

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said the U.S. intelligence community did not know he Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants would be able to invaded and take over a large region in Iraq so quickly.

“I think it’s a real wake up call for the United States,” she said, adding a warning that ISIS wants to “develop the caliphate.”

“Obviously, we know about ISIS,” she continued. “We’ve seen its developments in Syria. We knew they were a brutal bunch.”  but added an excuse for the intel failure Feinstein said  “Let’s look at this practically. You either have to have the technical means up in the sky or in other places, or you have to have assets – people who will give you human intelligence. This is a different culture. It’s very difficult to pierce. The piercing intelligence wise in terms of humans has been very difficult all along.”
