USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page and New York Times Washington Bureau Chief and Political Editor Carolyn Ryan argued that the crisis on the southern border was “a Katrina moment” and a “question of competence” for President Barack Obama in a discussion on Monday’s “The Daily Rundown” on MSNBC.
Ryan stated, “The sort of national funk that we’re in, this national malaise is partly due to a sense that things aren’t working. That we thought we solved Iraq or at least got out of it and now it’s exploding again. I think this crisis on the border does go to this question of competence and the problem with immigration is that there hasn’t been a consensus or clarity about our policy, and that’s why I feel like it can be a negative for President Obama where it seems like so many things in this country just aren’t working.”
“Daily Rundown” anchor Chuck Todd expressed surprise that the president was not visiting the border during his planned visit to Texas and asked why the president was going to fundraisers but not visiting the border, Page dubbed the president’s refusal to visit the border “a Katrina moment.”
