Cheney: Obama 'Doing Nothing' to Secure Border

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” former Vice President Dick Cheney accused President Barack Obama of “doing nothing” to secure the border and the president “clearly isn’t supporting security on the border.” Failures that he says have destroyed the “integrity” of the border.

Cheney was asked about a story by Breitbart Texas that stated “the belief among the illegal immigrants that they would receive permisos and be allowed to stay was the driving factor in their choices to come to the United States” based on an intelligence report from the El Paso Intelligence Center and the Bush administration’s 2008 anti-human trafficking law in creating this perception.

“I think a lot of that as I recall…a lot of it had to with the problem of human trafficking, and I think it had widespread support. I don’t think there was anything very controversial about it at the time,” Cheney said.  He added “I think partly what’s happened here is that there is an absolutely obviously this administration is doing nothing in terms of enforcing the border.”

He further expressed support for deporting the unaccompanied minors crossing into the United States, even though “it’s a painful difficult thing to do.”

“We need to send back to their home countries a lot of those folks that are out fleeing into the United States,” he added. “Until you do that, the traffickers will get away with pedaling the notion in Central America that if you just give me a few thousand dollars, I’ll take your son or daughter up and we’ll put them in the united states where they’ll be welcomed with open arms and become citizens of the United States.”
